Buying a high jump mat?

On 27 July 1993, Javier Sotomayor jumped a staggering 2.45 metres, setting a world record that has still not been broken after almost twenty years. Every high jumper can confirm that a jump of 2.5 metres is enormous. The fall that follows must of course be broken. A number of very reliable high jump mats have been developed for this purpose. However, not every high jump mat today is equally reliable. Therefore, the World Athletics (formerly IAAF) issues certificates to products that meet their requirements for safety and reliability. When an athletics club is going to buy a high jump mat, we therefore advise to only buy materials with an World Athletics certificate.

Think about regulations and safety

Thanks to regulations from bodies such as the World Athletics (World Athletics), the disciplines within athletics are becoming safer and safer. The downside is that obsolete materials eventually no longer meet the competition requirements. When in doubt about the requirements that athletics equipment must meet, you can contact one of our athletics equipment experts without obligation!

Frequently asked questions

  • What are the dimensions of a high jump mat?

A high jump mat suitable for competition (World Athletics certified) shall have a landing zone (behind the vertical plane) with the following minimum dimensions: 6 metres (length) x 4 metres (width) x 0.7 metres (height).

High jump mats with a length of 5 meters and width of 0.7 meters are not allowed for competitions and training. Therefore, we strongly recommend choosing a landing mat that is suitable for competitions. Until 2028, high jump mats with a height of 0.6 metres are tolerated.

  • How can I ensure that a high jump mat is protected from the weather and rodents?

The most durable option is to use a rain cover and canopy. If accommodations experience a lot of nuisance from rodents, we recommend a roof with a spindle system. This system ensures that the roof can be lowered to the ground.

  • What are the requirements for high jump mats for competitions?

There are a number of requirements to ensure the safety of the high jumper.

The first is the shielding of the decking, whereby the protection may extend no more than 10 cm above the decking. Of course, this does not apply to integrated decks.

Secondly, the top of the boarding must be rounded off.

Thirdly, both the high jump mat and the underlying platform should at least lie against the edge of the synthetic material of the run-up.

Fourth, the landing mat must have the following minimum dimensions: 6 metres (length) x 4 metres (width) x 0.7 metres (height). A length of 5 metres is allowed, but strongly discouraged!

  • What is an advantage of an World Athletics certified high jump mat?

When athletics equipment has an World Athletics certificate, the equipment meets the requirements of World Athletics. This ensures that the material can be used during official (international) competitions. An World Athletics-certified high jump mat is a landing mat of the highest quality.
