Netball

Netball is a dynamic team sport that combines elements of basketball and korfball. It is a fast-growing sport in the Netherlands, especially popular because of its accessible rules and social character. Among other things, we supply mobile poles for netball.

What is Netball?

Netball is a dynamic team sport that is often compared to basketball, yet has its own unique characteristics. The sport – following pickleball and padel – is also gaining popularity in the Netherlands. Netball is played on a rectangular field with a goal ring at both ends without a board. The aim of the game is to score more goals than the opponent by throwing the ball through the opponent’s ring.

Origin of Netball

Netball is originally a sport that first originated in England. It began as a female version of basketball and was soon officially recognized as its own sport. Whereas basketball was known for its speed and physical contact, Netball was designed with less body contact and more focus on precision and teamwork. From then on, the sport spread rapidly, especially in countries such as New Zealand and Australia, where it is now one of the most popular sports. Netball is also gaining ground in the Netherlands, with a growing number of clubs and leagues.

Rules of Netball

The rules of Netball are relatively simple, but require speed and precision. The main rules are as follows:

  • A player is allowed to hold the ball for a maximum of three seconds.
  • Players are not allowed to run or dribble with the ball.
  • Players may only pass or shoot to a teammate within their playing area.
  • Each position on the field has specific restrictions on where it may play, meaning that not every player is allowed anywhere on the field.

These rules make for fast and strategic play, where teamwork is essential to success.

Netbal vs korfbal

Netball and korfball look similar at first glance, but there are some important differences between these two sports. Both are team sports in which a ball must be thrown into a ring to score, but the rules and style of play differ significantly.

In Netball, two teams of seven players play, with each player having a specific position with a limited playing area. This means that not everyone is allowed everywhere on the pitch. Moreover, in Netball you are not allowed to dribble or run with the ball, and a player is only allowed to hold the ball for three seconds. Korfball, on the other hand, is played with mixed teams of eight players (four men and four women), and everyone is allowed to move freely all over the pitch.
